We listen to a talk by Myoungjoon Kim of MediACT in S. Korea about the state of laborers media and media reform in that country. This talk was given during a session on globalizing media reform at the 2005 National Conference for Media Reform.
We also discuss right-wing attacks on the Newspaper Guild’s Linda Foley for comments she made at the conference regarding military attacks on journalists.

We interview Shawn Ewald, programmer and volunteer behind the A-Infos Radio Project. The project has been serving an archive of independently produced and shared radio programming since 1996 — before most of the world had heard of “mp3.” Ewald recently opened up the source of the softward that runs the Project so that others may also use or improve it.

John Downing is Professor of International Communication at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He is known for his work on media and race and ethnicity as well as examinations of radical media. He spoke to the Participatory Media Reading Group at the University of Illinois on April 22, 2005. In this talk he shares his background and interest in radical media, and lays out four areas that deserve more study, including indigenous peoples’ movements and Indymedia.
