John Anderson joins us for our 3rd annual year-end wrap-up. John is the producer of Media Minutes, a weekly five-minute media news program from the media reform organization Free Press, and the webmaster behind DIYmedia.net.
Drew talks to Mike Bonnano, one of the Yes Men, a group of identity correctors, who recently appeared on BBC TV as representatives of Dow chemical, in order to claim full responsibility for the Bhophal disaster 20 years ago. They discuss the intersection of art and activism, and the inspirations for the Yes Men’s brand of protest.
Andrew O’Baoill is our guest to discuss the young community and college radio movement in Ireland. Andrew is a PhD. student at the Institute of Communications Research at the University of Illinois and in the mid-90s he helped to put on the air one of the first college/community radio stations in Ireland, Flirt FM at the University of Galway.
On this edition, we talk to Leigh Robartes, chairman of the board of directors for Radio Free Moscow, KRFP, Moscow Idaho. Robartes is a veteran independent reporter and one of the founding members of Free Speech Radio News. We discuss the media scene in the Moscow area, and the need for community radio in smaller communities.
Paul and Drew discuss the five-year anniversary of Indymedia, coincident with the five-year anniversary of the WTO protests in Seattle. We listen to comments made in Dec. 1999 by former WEFT-airshifter and Urbana-Champaign IMC founding member Peter Miller about the original IMC after returning from the protests.
